Sweden´s Medtech Ecosystem

Medtech4Health Medtech4Health is a national Swedish strategic innovation program in medical technology. Medtech4Health works to ensure that more medical technology ideas and solutions are implemented in health and social care and create value for patients. To make this possible, we bring together actors in healthcare, academia, non-profit organisations, industry and innovation supporting actors in regional nodes in different types of projects. Medtech4Health is one of 17 strategic innovation programs working on behalf of the government through Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas.

Vinnova is Sweden’s government funded innovation agency. Vinnova opens the way for innovation that provides sustainable solutions and strengthens Swedish competitiveness. Vinnova bring together companies, researchers, the public sector and civil society in common directions so that they can together create the development Sweden needs.

Swedish Medtech, the association for Medtech Technology in Sweden has more than 200 member companies, consisting of both manufacturers and distributors..

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is Sweden’s research institute and innovation partner. Through international collaboration with industry, academia and the public sector, RISE ensures business competitiveness and contributes to a sustainable society.

Medtech4Health Partners

The programme has one regional partner per healthcare region, representing the region, academia and industry. In addition, there are two national partners, Swedish Medtech, which represents the medical technology industry, and the research institute RISE.

SWEDEN´S MEDTECH SECTOR

In 2022, there were almost 2200 companies in Sweden that develop, manufacture, distribute and/or market one or more medical devices, including digital solutions, and/or in vitro diagnostics. Around 550 of them have more than nine employees. The very smallest companies account for just over 75 per cent of the number of companies. Around 1660 enterprises are either sole traders or have up to nine employees.

The companies are spread throughout Sweden, but with a strong concentration in the metropolitan areas. Most are found in the Stockholm-Uppsala region with clear clusters in the Västra Götaland region and Skåne.

The medical technology industry is a knowledge-intensive industry. The total number of employees in 2022 was just over 27,000.

Exports of medical technology have increased by about SEK 9 billion since 2018 and will amount to 34.2 billion SEK.
