Introduced in 1960 as the U.S.'s primary Cold War main battle tank, the M60 was later acquired and enhanced by Israel, replacing the less successful M48. It first saw combat in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, where it excelled against similar tanks like the T-62. In 1982, during the Lebanon War, Israel employed upgraded M60s equipped with explosive reactive armor, effectively defending against guided missiles. Despite being superseded by the M1 Abrams in the U.S., the M60 continues to be widely used worldwide.
